Fanny Hensel Music School

On 15 March 2019, the jury met for the restricted art-in-architecture competition in connection with the renovation and extension of the Fanny Hensel Music School in Ruheplatzstraße. The jury recommended the realisation of the design by artist Esther Ernst The Fanny Hensel Music School was built in 1910-1911 by city planning officer Ludwig Hoffmann and is registered in the Berlin list of monuments under the number 09030157. The three-storey building with a basement is a solid brick structure.

The existing building of the Fanny Hensel Music School in Ruheplatzstraße is being refurbished and will be extended with spatial adaptation to the music school lessons, taking into account the latest requirements in terms of content and special room acoustics. The extension of the usable area amounts to 438 square metres. In connection with the construction project „Renovation and extension of the Fanny Hensel Music School“, the Berlin Mitte district office organised a non-open, single-phase art competition. The artists Esther Ernst, Anne Duk Hee Jordan, Hester Oerlemans and Miguel Rothschild were invited to take part in the competition. Chaired by artist Kathrin Glanz, the jury discussed all the submitted artistic designs in detail and recommended the realisation of the design „Drawing for three breaks, inlaid“ by artist Esther Ernst.
