Niki Matita in conversation with Thomas Flierl and Georg Wasmuth

The first conversation took place with cultural theorist Thomas Flierl and architect Georg Wasmuth. Dedicated to the history and beauty of Karl-Marx-Allee’s second section, the first city walk begins with a bird’s eye view of the area before zooming in to seek out traces of its most unique facets, how much of them remains visible today and in what ways. The visionary urban planning ensemble was among the most important model projects of the 1960s and is representative of East German modernism. In combination with the understated aesthetics of the surrounding residential buildings, iconic structures such as the Kongresszentrum (bbc Berlin Congress Center), the Café Moskau or the Kino International were emblematic of the new attitude towards life taking hold at the time.
